Gynecomastia treatments, whether surgical or liposuction-related, are classified as cosmetic procedures, and are therefore not covered by health insurance. The cost of treatment depends on the type of treatment being performed and the doctor who is performing the procedure. Well-known doctors that operate out of high profile cosmetic surgery clinics typically charge more, while independent surgeons often offer patients a better price.

The country where the surgery is being performed also vastly influences the price. The most expensive countries in the world to have gynecomastia surgery or liposuction are the USA and the UK, both of which have an average price of between £4000 and £6000, with the USA being more expensive. UK residents have several lower priced options that are reasonably close to home, however. The same procedures that might cost £4000 in the UK may be found in other parts of Europe for considerably less. The lowest price may be found in Belgium (approximately £1000), with Poland and Sweden following closely behind with average costs of approximately £1100 and £1300, respectively. Many other countries such as India, Turkey and Vietnam offer the same procedures at competitive rates, although one must factor in the cost of travel to determine whether it will really be worth the trip.

Treatment for pseudo gynecomastia (fat-induced) can be done using various liposuction techniques, including Vaser Lipo and Smartlipo, and the standard treatment for glandular gynecomastia is breast reduction surgery. The severity of the condition influences the cost because of the complexity of the surgery and the length of time taken to perform the procedure. Some procedures may involve just a tiny incision and the removal of a small amount of glandular tissue, while others may involve the removal of loose skin in addition to a substantial amount of fat and glandular tissue. In extreme cases, major reconstruction of the breast may be necessary.

When shopping for a cosmetic surgeon, don’t automatically settle for the lowest price because quality is of utmost importance. Ask for referrals from your doctor or better yet, from someone else who has already had the surgery. Most people don’t know anyone who has had gynecomastia surgery because most men who have had the surgery tend to keep quiet about it, but it isn’t difficult to find a surgeon who specialises in your desired procedure.

Most surgeons will offer a free consultation, in which you can inquire as to how many of the procedures the surgeon has performed and even ask to see before and after pictures. Good cosmetic surgeons take before and after photos and usually keep albums of them on hand for prospective patients to view. This inspires confidence in the surgeon and can influence a patient’s decision when choosing a cosmetic surgeon. The more before and after photos a surgeon has, the better. It means that he or she has plenty of experience in performing your procedure and you will be in good hands. When it comes to making permanent changes to your body, an experienced surgeon is well worth the cost.
